Γνωστή για την σκληρότητα της, το φυσικό της κάλλος αλλά και την ανεξαρτησία του λαού της, η Μάνη δέχεται πλήθος κόσμου τόσο την καλοκαιρινή περίοδο όσο και τη χειμερινή. Η ανάγκη σε παροχή βοήθειας κάθε τύπου είναι η πρόκληση που δέχεται καθημερινά η εθελοντική ομάδα της ΓΑΙΑ. Προσωπικό στοίχημα όλων η άμεση επέμβαση σε πυρκαγιές και σε υγειονομικά περιστατικά.

Αναζήτηση αγνοουμένων – Οι εθελοντές της ΓΑΙΑ πέρασαν πολλές ώρες βοηθώντας στο έργο της την αστυνομία για την αναζήτηση αρκετών αγνοουμένων.
Δενδροφύτευση του Ταϋγέτου – Οι εθελοντές της ΓΑΙΑ σχεδίασαν και συνεργάστηκαν με άλλες ομάδες για να συνεχιστεί η αναδάσωση των πρανών που καταστράφηκαν στις πυρκαγιές λίγα χρόνια πριν.
Περιπολίες και βοήθεια σε ακραία καιρικά φαινόμενα – Η περιοχή μεταξύ Στούπας και Αγίου Νικολάου έχει ένα τοπικό καιρικό φαινόμενο το οποίο δημιουργίται όταν οι ισχυροί άνεμοι που διοχετεύονται από δύο κατευθύνσεις προκαλούν ανεμοστρόβιλους, έτσι η οδήγηση σε αυτό το τμήμα της οδού μπορεί να γίνει πολύ επικίνδυνο.
Οι εθελοντές της ΓΑΙΑ έχουν ασχοληθεί με πολλά περιστατικά σε δύσκολες και επικίνδυνες συνθήκες, όταν οι άνεμοι ξεπερνούν τα 10 μποφόρ. Πάνω από 36 ώρες κλήθηκαν σε 11 χωριστά περιστατικά που περιλαμβάνει την αφαίρεση δέντρων από το οδόστρωμα, αφαιρώντας τα καλώδια ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος που είχαν πέσει κατά μήκος του δρόμου, αφαιρώντας μια καμινάδα και κατάσβεση δύο πυρκαγιών.
Σαϊδόνα: Αφαίρεση του καλωδίου ρεύματος – Το καλώδιο υψηλής τάσης, το οποίο βρισκόταν απέναντι από το δρόμο, πέταγε σπινθήρες προκαλώντας μικρές πυρκαγιές, και εκτέθοντας σε κίνδυνο ανθρώπους και οχήματα.
Καστανιά: Τροχαίο ατύχημα – Ένα αυτοκίνητο βγήκε από το δρόμο και υπέστει σοβαρές ζημιές, αλλά ευτυχώς ο οδηγός ήταν σώος.
30 Μαρτίου Βάση ΓΑΙΑ – Εκπαίδευση Πρώτων Βοηθειών. Μετά την διήμερη εκπαίδευση, 20 εθελοντές ΓΑΙΑ πυροσβέστες έχουν την “Malteser” Ist Ευρωπαϊκό Πιστοποιητικό Α’Βοηθειών.
Απρίλιο του 2012 μέχρι σήμερα: ο John Lawton, δρομέας αντοχής, εξαφανίστηκε κατά τη διάρκεια του Μαραθωνίου πρόκληση Ταϋγέτου. Η αναζήτηση του ξεκίνησε αμέσως. Τα προηγούμενα χρόνια, όλοι οι
φορείς που εμπλέκονταν σε έρευνα και διάσωση έτειναν να δρουν ανεξάρτητα και περισσότερο από αυτό, οι επίσημοι χρόνοι αναζήτησης περιορίστηκαν σε 72 ώρες. Στην συγκεκριμένη υπόθεση άλλαξε αυτό… όλες οι εθελοντικές ομάδες συνεργάστηκαν με την αστυνομία και την πυροσβεστική υπηρεσία Καλαμάτας, με τη ΓΑΙΑ να παίζει σημαντικό ρόλο στον συντονισμό της έρευνας. Άρχίζαν κάθε μέρα στις 6 το πρωί και τελειώνανε αργά τη νύχτα.
Μια τεράστια προσπάθεια που πραγματοποιήθηκε από τους τοπικούς φορείς και εθελοντές, που έδωσαν το χρόνο τους… εκπαιδευμένους σκύλους που μεταφέρθηκαν από την Αθήνα και ένα ελικόπτερο Super Puma και πέταξε στην περιοχή και είχε έρθει από την Αθήνα (με κόστος € 30.000).
Ένα σημαντικό δίδαγμα από αυτήν την αποστολή ήταν η ανάγκη για μια κάμερα θερμικής απεικόνισης, ένα κόστος ύψους € 18.000 περίπου για την απόκτηση του, που θα αύξανε τις ικανότητες όλων στο όριο… αλλά η ανάγκη είναι προφανής όσον αφορά την αποτελεσματικότητα και την προσπάθεια αυτών που ασχολούνται με ανθρώπους που βρίσκονται παγιδευμένοι σε πυρκαγιές, σε τροχαία ατυχήματα καθώς και αυτούς που έχουν χαθεί.
Εκδηλώσεις / Δραστηριότητες το 2011
Το 2011 τα μέλη της ΓΑΙΑ εντάχθηκαν μαζί με άλλες ομάδες σε μια μεγάλη διαδικασία δενδροφύτευσης στην δασική περιοχή ανάμεσα στην Καλαμάτα και στη Σπάρτη, που υπέστει σοβαρές καταστροφές στις πυρκαγιές του 2007. Σε μία ημέρα, παρά την ομίχλη και το ψιλόβροχο, 650 εθελοντές φύτεψαν 11.000 δέντρα συγκλονιστικό. Στις 19 Φεβρουαρίου 2011: μετά από μια σφοδρή καταιγίδα, στη μέση της νύχτας, πλυμμήρησαν οι παραθαλάσσιες περιοχές των χωριών Τραχήλα, Αγιο Νικόλαο, Στούπα και Καρδαμύλη. Οι εθελοντές εργάστηκαν ακούραστα από 6:00 το πρωί μέχρι τις 23:00.
Ανοιξιάτικος καθαρισμός στο φαράγγι Κοσκάργας – Η ΓΑΙΑ είχε διοργανώσει την καθαριότητα αυτού του μέρους. Αρκετές εθελοντικές ομάδες από όλη τη Μεσσηνία και πολλοί πολίτες από το κοινό, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και την ομάδα σπηλαιολόγων με δεξιότητές στο ραπέλ συμμετήχαν με ενθουσιασμό, στην αφαίρεσει των σκουπιδιών από το πόδι της γέφυρας. Μετά τον καθαρισμό υπήρχε φαγητό και μουσική για τους συμμετέχοντες. (Αυτό ήταν μέρος του κινήματος “Κρατήστε τη Μάνη Καθαρή”, μια ομάδα εθελοντών οι οποίοι συναντιούνται μία φορά το μήνα για να καθαρίσει ένα συγκεκριμένο τομέα π.χ. ένα χωριό, μια χαράδρα μια παραλία κ.λπ.),
Λεύκτρο – χαμηλής έντασης φωτιά σε ελαιώνα και άγρια βλάστηση.
Ένας αγρότης καθάριζε τη γη. Η ΓΑΙΑ κλήθηκε, όταν η φωτιά ξέφυγε από τον έλεγχο και 3 ελιές και 100 τ.μ. γης κάηκαν. Ήταν σε μια δύσκολη θέση, σε ένα φαράγγι.
Δυτική Μάνη: Αναζήτηση αγνοούμενου – Η ΓΑΙΑ με τους εθελοντές της εντάχθηκαν στην αστυνομία που έψαχνε για ένα 65 ετών άνδρα με προβλήματα υγείας που εξαφανίστηκε. Πέρασαν 5 ημέρες με αναζήτηση σε σπήλαια και βάραθρα μεταξύ Καρδαμύλη και Καλαμάτα. Δυστυχώς ο άνθρωπος δεν έχει ακόμη βρεθεί.
Στούπα: Πρόβατα διάσωσης – 4 μεγάλα πρόβατα είχαν κολλήσει σε βράχια κοντά στη θάλασσα. Έπρεπε να ανελκυστούν με ασφάλεια χρησιμοποιώντας σχοινιά, σε γκρεμό 7 μέτρων.
Χρηματοδότηση
Καθώς επεκτείνονται οι δραστηριότητες της και η ανάγκες γίνονται πιο επιτακτικές, η επαρκή χρηματοδότηση γίνεται ολοένα και πιο απαραίτητη.

GAIA
The Mani has always been known for the toughness and independence of its people: they have a long tradition of self-reliance. In times like these there is even greater need of this resourcefulness and local people have met the challenge magnificently. The flagship in this movement is GAIA.
GAIA: “an association of volunteers, dedicated to preserving nature and local culture”.
The official description of this local organisation might not, in translation, fully convey the degree of effort and level of seriousness that its members give to the
local community. GAIA have a history of working on environmental issues that do justice to the ancient Greek goddess from whom they take their name. They need help, so please read on.
Background
The organisation was formed in 2000 by doctor Grigoris Orfanidis when he arrived back in Greece from working in Switzerland. He took note of the concern for the environment already being shown by some local activists, especially by a group from Saidona – they were engaged in clearing the rubbish discarded into gorges and elsewhere, as well as in promoting activities which made use of the fantastic natural resources of the area (rock- climbing, caving and diving). In 2000 therefore, Doctor Grigoris decided the time was right to co-ordinate this work and give it an official framework. GAIA was the result. It is GAIA
volunteers who have kept the roadsides clear and Gaia who prompted the introduction of recycling bins and battery disposal bins.
But the main threat to the environment here is, and always has been, fire. Everyone can remember the terrible scenes shown on international TV news in 2007, as fires swept through Greece. The problem the Stoupa area has is that it is halfway between Kalamata and Areopolis (the nearest fire stations) and therefore about an hour away from any help. Not a good situation if one has ever seen how quickly fires can spread in such a dry climate. So, in 2007, with donations from both local and foreign inhabitants, funds were raised for GAIA to procure two fire engines. The first was driven over by members from Germany and later in the same year, a team of Austrian firemen themselves drove over the second fire truck. These men stayed for a week to give
training on how to use the donated equipment. These acquisitions spurred the organisation on and subsequently they have re-organised their constitution and
registered with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.
Activities
Out of the many volunteers, the fire crew are perhaps the most dedicated. The team of twenty, under the command of Kostas Xydeas, have six fully trained drivers. From May to October there is a rota system, where crew members are on permanent standby, being in communication with each other and with central control through their own radio network. However, if an incident requires it, other volunteers will be called upon on to help out in any way that the situation requires- taking medical supplies to the scene or food and water for the firemen etc. Since 2005, they have been called to 140 incidents of fire.

GAIA’s responsibilities to ‘civil protection’ are widespread. Recently they were called to Areopolis to search out and rescue an elderly person suffering from dementia who had gone walkabout. And they are on call to arrive at the scene of any car accidents or to go to the aid of swimmers getting into trouble out at sea. One area of their work that will strike a chord with animal-lovers is rescuing animals in difficulty.
From cows fallen into gorges, to injured owls and hawks, goats and sheep stuck in places from where they can’t come back (in the photo: the rescue of 4 large sheep on a ledge near the sea), stray dogs to be fed and adopted, cats on top of roofs,
Gaia tries their best to help in all kind of difficult situations involving animals.
Events/Activities in 2012
Search for missing person : GAIA volunteers spent many hours helping the police search for a missing person. It was thought he might have had a car accident and the area from Stoupa to Kalamata was searched. The search was called off when his car was found parked at Kalamata castle.
Tree Planting on Taygetos – GAIA volunteers planned to join other groups to continue the re-forestation of the slopes that were devastated in fires a few years
ago.
Severe weather patrols – The area between Stoupa and Ag Nikolaos has a local weather phenomenon which means that strong winds are funnelled in 2 directions and can cause whirlwinds, so driving on this section of road can be very dangerous.
GAIA volunteers dealt with many incidents in difficult and dangerous conditions when winds exceeded force 10. Over 36hours they were called to 11 separate incidents which included removing trees from the roadway, removing electricity cables that had fallen across the road, removing a chimney and putting out two fires.
Saidona – Removal of a power cable – The high voltage power cable, which was lying across the road and pavement, was sparking and causing small fires, making it a danger to people and vehicles.
Kastania – Car accident – A car went off the road and was badly damaged, but fortunately the driver escaped unhurt.
In 2011 GAIA members joined other associations in a mammoth tree-planting exercise in the forestland between Kalamata and Sparti which suffered severe devastation in the 2007 fires. In one day, despite the mist and drizzle, 650 volunteers planted a staggering 11,000 trees. On February 19th, 2011, they were central in the clear up operation after a fierce storm in the middle of the night caused havoc on the seafronts at Trahila, Agios Nikolaos, Stoupa and Kardamyli. Volunteers worked tirelessly from 6am until 11pm.
Spring cleaning party at Koskarakas Gorge – GAIA had organised a major clean-up of this well-known beauty spot.
Several other voluntary groups from across Messinia and many members of the public joined in with enthusiasm, including the caving group that displayed
their skills abseiling down to remove rubbish from the foot of the bridge. After the cleaning there was food and music for the volunteers. (this was part of the movement “Keep the Mani Clean”, a group of volunteers who meet once a month to clean a particular area e.g. a village, a gorge a beach etc),
Lefktron – Low intensity fire in a field of olive trees, weeds and wild vegetation.
A farmer was clearing the land. GAIA were called when a fire got out of control and 3 olive trees and 100sq metres of land were burnt. It was a difficult location in a gorge.
West Mani – Search for missing person – GAIA volunteers joined the police searching for a missing 65 year old man with health problems. They spent 5 days
searching the caves and potholes between Kardamyli and Kalamata. Sadly the man has still not been found.
Stoupa – Sheep rescue – 4 large sheep were stuck on a ledge near the sea. They had to be hauled to safely with ropes, up a 7 metre precipice.
Mar 30th, 31st: GAIA centre – First Aid training. After the 2-day training, 20 GAIA volunteer fire-fighters have the “Malteser” European Ist Aid certificate (The German equivalent of St John’s Ambulance).
April 2012 till today: John Lawton, endurance runner, went missing during the Taygetos Challenge Marathon. Searches started immediately. Previously, all
agencies involved in search and rescue tended to act independently and more than that, official search times were limited to 72 hours. The case of the missing
endurance runner has changed this as until today, all volunteer groups worked together with the police and the Kalamata fire brigade, with GAIA playing the major role in coordinating the search, beginning each day at 6am and finishing late at night.
A huge effort was put in by all concerned- local volunteers gave up their time, sniffer dogs were brought from Athens and a super puma helicopter also flew down from Athens (at a cost of €30,000).
A lesson learnt from this mission was the need for a thermal imaging camera. At a cost of €18,000 acquiring one will stretch their fund-raising abilities to the limit but the need is obvious in terms of both effectiveness and effort in dealing with people trapped in fires, in car crashes as well as those who have gone missing.
Funding
As the organisation grows, adequate funding becomes ever more crucial. Currently
this is achieved in a number of ways.
• Members’ registration fees.
• Donations from local individuals and businesses
• Donations from other local societies.
How You Can Help
The following much-needed additions to enable GAIA to function more effectively makes the fund-raising task even more challenging.
– The CB radio network is crucial, especially for fire-fighting. Mobile phone reception varies in quality in the area- a clear result of the mountainous terrain. The same problems apply to their radio network. They have experimented with the placement of a not-yet-paid-for antenna and concluded that Pyrgos was the best location. But, there are still blind spots and so they hope to acquire a portable antenna to cover all eventualities. Therefore, wherever help was needed, communication could be made not just to GAIA central control but to other emergency services.
– The two fire engines are now getting a bit long in the tooth and although a greatimprovement on the previous alternative of a pick-up with a water tank on the back, they have proved not to be ideal in dealing with such a diverse terrain. Therefore a far more versatile Mobi Truck is highly desired.
“We are like a family. After 3 years working side by side in different situations, many of which were quite dangerous, we are connected in a
way that is above simple friendship. We are more like fellow comrades.
We protect each other the same way. We have made a point that GAIA is not political. We put ourselves out there for everyone in need. We are available 24/7 and carry out civil protection. We are happy and grateful for all the support we get from members and friends without which things would be very difficult for us. This support strengthens us and so, in return, we can fully give back to the community what is required, whenever we are called upon.”
